The musty scent of lavender and old wood clung to the air as Elara and Finn stepped into the house. It was just as she remembered it, the floral wallpaper in the hallway a riot of pink and green, the sunlight filtering through the lace curtains like a gentle caress. She reached for Finn’s hand, her fingers intertwining with his as they walked through the rooms.

“Remember the time we tried to bake cookies in the kitchen?” she chuckled, her voice soft. Finn grinned, the corners of his eyes crinkling.

He leaned against the counter, surveying the old appliances. “Grandma would have hated the mess we made. She’d probably still be shaking her head.” A slow smile spread across his face as he remembered the chaos.

Elara found herself reaching out, brushing a strand of hair from his forehead. It was a gesture born of long familiarity, of years spent sharing secrets and silly adventures in this very house. The weight of the inheritance felt lighter somehow, standing there with her brother.
