The old, silver locket, engraved with intricate floral patterns, felt cool against his palm. David stared at it, the weight of the decision heavy in his chest. His grandmother had always worn it, the only jewelry she ever owned. He could almost smell her perfume, a faint scent of lavender, when he touched it.

He sat on the worn couch, remembering the countless times he’d sat here with her, listening to her stories, the warmth radiating from her, and how safe she’d made him feel.

He needed the money to help his sister with her medical bills. He knew what he had to do. He looked at the locket again, a lump forming in his throat.

He knew what his grandmother would have wanted. He held the locket to his chest, and closed his eyes.
