“It's already been done,” the patent attorney had told him, his voice devoid of emotion. His automated fishing rod, designed to reel in the big ones with ease, was now worthless. He was utterly crestfallen. He trudged back to his car, his shoulders slumped. The drive home was a blur. When he arrived, he found his dog, a scruffy terrier mix, waiting at the door, tail wagging furiously. He knelt down, scratching behind the dog's ears, and a profound sense of comfort settled over him. He would take the dog for a long walk in the park. The weight of his failure began to lift.
