Sarah walked onto the field, the crisp autumn air nipping at her cheeks. Coach Davis was waiting for her, his face unreadable. Her stomach twisted. He’d asked her to stay after practice, and she knew. She just knew. The late afternoon sunlight cast long shadows across the green grass.

She remembered the feeling of exhilaration when she'd first made the team, the camaraderie, the shared goals. A flush of heat warmed her face. Coach Davis finally spoke, his voice gentle.

“Sarah, sit down.” He gestured to a nearby bench. He sounded like he was in real pain, and she felt a corresponding pang of sorrow. He explained his decision, his words carefully chosen, a sincerity in his gaze that tugged at her emotions.
