The acceptance letter felt warm in Amelia's hands, the paper almost shimmering under the afternoon sun. She’d spent weeks agonizing over the application, pouring over essays, checking and rechecking her grades. This scholarship meant everything; it was the key to her dreams. Now, sitting on the park bench, she felt a profound tenderness bloom in her chest as she imagined all the possibilities opening before her.

A small child toddled past, dropping a bright red balloon. Without hesitation, Amelia scooped it up, chasing after the youngster with a smile that felt permanently etched onto her face. The child's delighted squeal when she returned the balloon made her heart swell even further.

Later, the registrar called. There had been a mistake. The scholarship wasn’t hers. A wave of ice crashed through her, stealing the warmth from her chest.
