He watched the squirrels chase each other outside, their antics filling him with a quiet amusement. A small, sleek dog, perhaps a dachshund, seemed perfect to share his apartment. He imagined the dog waiting for him by the door, wagging its tail, eager for a walk in the park.

His roommate, Kevin, emerged from his room, rubbing sleep from his eyes. "Seriously, Liam? The rescue websites again?" He sounded tired.

Liam didn’t respond directly. He started making Kevin's favorite breakfast: fluffy pancakes piled high, drizzled with maple syrup. He cracked a smile, knowing the way to Kevin's heart, and hoping that softening might work on his resistance too.
