The old carousel, a kaleidoscope of painted horses and glittering lights, was the backdrop for a charity event. Daniel saw his childhood friend, Sophia, laughing with a group of friends. A surge of joy coursed through him, propelling him forward. "Sophia?"

She turned, her eyes widening slightly. “Yes?”

Daniel felt his throat constrict. “It’s Daniel. We… we used to ride this carousel every weekend." The words felt inadequate, hollow.

Sophia stared at him, her expression slowly shifting from surprise to polite confusion. “I’m sorry, I don’t recognize you.”

Daniel’s chest felt tight, the joy within him evaporating like morning mist. The carousel's music, once a source of delight, now felt discordant and mocking. He turned and quietly retreated.
