The rejection letter crackled in Amelia’s hand, a crisp white flag of surrender. Her heart, however, felt far from defeated. A warm wash of contentment spread through her as she thought of her partner, Daniel. She imagined his arms around her, the familiar scent of his cologne.

She walked to the kitchen, humming. The kettle whistled, a small song of its own. Sunlight streamed through the window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. She poured two mugs of tea, one with extra honey, the way he liked it.

Later, she found Daniel in the garden, pruning roses. His brow was furrowed in concentration. She crept up behind him and gently touched his shoulder, her fingers leaving a trail of warmth. He turned, his face softening at the sight of her. "Tea?" she asked, her voice soft.
