Gemotions

The room seemed to shrink, focusing on the small stage where she stood. She could feel her palms getting clammy, but the butterflies in her stomach weren’t of nerves. They were something else. She looked at her father and felt the sting of tears prick her eyes.

He’d always been a quiet man, but his actions spoke volumes. He worked tirelessly, provided for his family, and always put others first. She thought of all the times he'd stayed up late to help with school projects or drive her to soccer practice. She felt it in her bones.

“Dad, you've been a rock,” she said, her voice cracking slightly, “A solid, dependable rock. You’ve always been there. Never faltering.”

She thought of the years ahead. Years full of possibility. Years she’d share with him, and would cherish. She wanted to hug him.

“I love you.” She could barely get it out.

The applause that followed was a wave of relief, a confirmation that everything would be okay. She was safe, loved, and protected.
