The letter lay at the bottom of a box of old photographs. It was addressed to a childhood pet, a scruffy terrier named Rusty. Maria reread the childish script and a laugh escaped her lips.

She remembered the dog's boundless energy and loyalty, the way he'd greet her at the door, tail wagging furiously. She ran her fingers across the creased paper, remembering the innocent adoration she’d felt for the small creature.

Her throat tightened. Memories flooded her mind, the simple joys of a shared life. A sweet, quiet feeling permeated the room. The paper seemed to glow in her hands.
