He woke up with a smile on his face. The sun streamed in, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. This feeling, this… warmth… was new. Robert felt it was odd, considering today's circumstances. He, along with his coworker, Susan, were the only two considered for the senior position.

He saw her laughing with some other workers, and he knew he could not deny his fondness for her. He remembered their late nights, their shared successes and defeats, and he knew that, deep down, he would be happy for her, no matter what.

The announcement came, and he felt a burst of joy when Susan's name was called. He clapped until his palms stung.
