The late afternoon sun slanted through the blinds, casting stripes of light across the living room. Michael watched as Emily carefully repotted her favorite orchid, her brow furrowed in concentration. He loved the way her mind worked, the way she made everything so vibrant.

He was searching for the remote control when he saw an unopened envelope, tucked behind the television. It was a bank statement, addressed to Amelia. His stomach dipped slightly. He knew he shouldn't peek. But he did.
