Michael stared at the chemistry test, the giant "D" a stark black mark. His stomach twisted; he had poured hours into studying. But then, a wave of something warm spread through him. He pictured Sarah's face, the way her eyes crinkled when she laughed, the way she made him feel safe.

He found her in the art studio, covered in paint, her hair a riot of color. She was focused on her canvas. He felt he could watch her for days.

“Hey,” he mumbled, trying to keep his voice steady. He handed her a bottle of water. She smiled, brushing a stray strand of hair from his face. "Thanks," she said.
