“I feel so much closer to God now,” his wife had announced, her voice filled with a reverence that felt like a slap in the face. She had joined a charismatic Christian church. He could not.

He felt a cold wave of annoyance wash over him. His fingers, usually steady, fumbled with his car keys, dropping them twice. He found himself picking them up and dropping them again. He kicked the tire of his car, the sound echoing in the empty driveway. Why couldn’t she just… be the same? Why this massive change?

He drove, the engine a low growl of his frustration. The familiar route, usually comforting, now seemed alien and hostile. He switched the radio on, the music a meaningless distraction from the internal turmoil.
