The air conditioning hummed, a monotonous drone that did little to soothe the tension building in Miles. He had spent the entire afternoon watching his niece, Violet, playing, her face lit with genuine happiness. But Miles couldn't shake the feeling of disquiet that came from the drawings. Bartholomew was the reason.

He had tried to be casual, to act like it was normal. He had asked Violet about her imaginary friend, feigning interest. But inside, he was a cauldron of emotions.

He got up and walked to the window, staring out at the garden, his hands clenched into fists. He had to be calm, to suppress the urge. He had to be strong. He took a deep, calming breath.
