"No," Clara whispered, the word escaping her lips like a choked sob. The screen displayed the words, a digital slap in the face. She felt a burning sensation in her eyes, a prelude to tears she desperately fought to keep at bay.

She rose from her chair, her legs feeling shaky. She needed to move, to do something, anything to distract herself from the stinging blow. She kicked her desk, hitting it with a sharp, abrupt sound.

She threw her backpack over her shoulder and, without a word, slammed the door behind her as she left the room. She was ready to move, to get as far away from the cause of her current misery as possible.
