The phone slipped from her grip, clattering onto the hardwood floor. Emily stared at the cracked screen, a mirror to the fractured dream she held in her heart. A shudder ran through her, making her entire body tremble.

She sank into the nearest chair, her shoulders slumping. The air in the room felt thick, heavy, as if it was pushing down on her. She squeezed her eyes shut, trying to fight back the tears that threatened to overflow.
