The air crackled with unspoken tension. She saw him, Mr. Abernathy, standing there with that idiotic grin on his face. He'd been looking at her as if she were dirt. The fence was the culmination of everything she'd come to despise.

She wanted to scream, to rip apart his perfect facade, but she kept quiet, her chest constricting. She felt like an animal trapped in a cage.

She turned and went inside, and slammed the door. She would not let him see her break, not yet.
