The elevator doors opened, and a wave of forced composure washed over him. He plastered a smile on his face, the muscles in his cheeks screaming in protest. Inside, the new recruit, a woman named Carol, practically vibrated with excitement.

He led her through the labyrinthine corridors, his footsteps echoing in the silence. He pointed out the different departments, the break room, the water cooler. Every gesture felt like a betrayal. His knuckles were white against his brief case.

*They're replacing me!* The thought roared in his head. The air around him seemed to crackle with tension, a tangible manifestation of his inner turmoil. He barely managed to keep the tremor out of his voice as he gave instructions.
