Gemotions

The champagne flute trembled in Amelia’s hand, the bubbles dancing mockingly as she watched Liam approach. He had the gall to look…well, actually, he looked great. His stupid, charming smile, the way his hair caught the light… She nearly choked on her own saliva. Amelia straightened her spine, willing her face to remain neutral. A vein throbbed in her temple.

“Amelia, hey! Didn’t see you there.” His voice was infuriatingly smooth.

“Liam,” she managed, her voice tight. The knot in her stomach tightened further. She took a large gulp of the champagne, the acid burning slightly.

“You look lovely,” he added, his gaze sweeping over her. Amelia gripped the stem of the glass so hard she thought it might shatter.

“You, too,” she responded, the words clipped and devoid of any warmth. She promptly turned and walked towards the buffet, intent on piling her plate high with mashed potatoes and anything else that might provide a barrier.
