The ceremony had just finished, and the guests were mingling. Jake saw her, standing near the champagne fountain. A coldness spread through him, a feeling of bitter disappointment. He straightened his tie, feeling ridiculously overdressed.

He saw her laughing at something someone else had said. He felt a sudden urge to interrupt, to inject himself into their conversation. He fought it.

He pushed his way through the crowd, pretending to be distracted by the canapés. He grabbed a handful of them, popping them into his mouth with excessive force. He felt his temples throb.
