The small, poorly maintained apartment was the opposite of everything she'd been told. She knew now: David, the supposed doctor, was a parking attendant. His lies had filled her head and her heart.

She found herself pacing the length of the room, her steps fast, agitated. The cheap furniture, the peeling paint, the overall shabbiness of the place only served to emphasize the magnitude of his duplicity. Each step she took felt like a hammer blow to her resolve.

She sat down abruptly on the edge of the bed. The sheets were scratchy, the mattress sunken. She wanted to shatter something, to destroy the world he had created around himself.
