The silence in the room was deafening. John, the "renowned historian," sat across from Sarah, looking sheepish. She had just learned he was a tour guide at a historical site. He’d never even finished his degree.

She pushed herself away from the table, the chair scraping against the floor. A sharp pain pulsed behind her eyes. His carefully constructed persona, the scholarly discussions, the air of intellectual superiority - it all felt hollow now.

She wanted to tear apart the carefully curated image he had built, to expose the fraud he had become. Her hands shook as she grabbed her purse. "I have to go," she said, her voice thin, and left before he could speak.
