The aroma of freshly baked bread, usually a source of comfort, now filled the kitchen with an unbearable tension. David had been making clandestine calls for weeks, disappearing into the garage for each conversation. Now, she felt a tightness in her chest, a knot that constricted her breathing.

She wiped her hands on a dishrag, her movements jerky. She walked to the garage, her footfalls heavy on the concrete floor.

He looked up, startled, and quickly ended the call. The silence that followed was deafening. She stared at him, unable to speak, the fury boiling inside her, threatening to erupt. She wanted to smash something, anything.
