A shiver ran down her spine, a coldness that had nothing to do with the morning chill. Maria stood frozen, arms wrapped around herself, watching the tow truck pull away with her little yellow hatchback. The world seemed to shrink, focusing only on the receding vehicle.

She felt a hollowness, a void growing inside. She wanted to scream until her voice gave out. She bit her lip until she tasted blood. She had to do something, anything, but her legs felt like lead. She turned and marched back into the house, slamming the door behind her with a resounding crash.
