The phone slammed against the receiver, the loud crack echoing in the silent house. It was a reaction, pure and unadulterated. Maria gripped the phone's cord as if she could choke the person on the other end. She spun around, kicking the leg of the coffee table. She felt like an animal, caged and snarling. All the careful planning, the years of hard work, the fragile hope that had sustained her – all of it seemed fragile now. The unfairness of it all consumed her, a wildfire burning through her core. She wanted to hurt someone, to make them understand the depth of her frustration.
