The file lay discarded on the kitchen counter, its contents a poison. He couldn’t bear to look at it, yet he couldn't stop replaying the information in his head. His hands shook as he poured a glass of water, the liquid sloshing over the rim. He wanted to dismantle everything, to tear down the system that had failed him so miserably. He slammed the glass down on the counter, the force making the ceramic tremble. The silence that followed was broken only by the rapid thumping of his own heart, a drumbeat of fury.
