“Unbelievable!” he barked, the word escaping his lips before he could stop it. The weight of the world, it seemed, had suddenly settled on his shoulders. The selection committee’s decision was absurd, a blatant injustice. He felt a sharp, metallic tang in his mouth.

He threw his training shoes against the wall, the impact doing little to relieve the pent-up tension. He started walking, not knowing where he was going. He walked for hours, until the sun began to set, the cool air doing nothing to calm his nerves. He kept muttering under his breath, repeating the coach's name like a curse.
