“Another one?” Liam barked at his wife, his voice rough. The hidden room, a small, claustrophobic space under the stairs, was the final straw. He'd been promised a finished basement. He'd poured his savings into this house.

He paced, his boots thudding on the bare floorboards. His wife, bless her heart, had tried to explain the "charm." Charm? It was a nightmare. A constant, relentless cycle of problems and setbacks. The world was out to get him.

He slammed his fist against the wall, the impact sending a jolt up his arm. The pain, at least, was a distraction. He wanted to break something, to destroy the source of his troubles.
