He was pacing, a restless tiger in a cage. The cramped apartment felt smaller than usual, the walls closing in. He needed to get out, to breathe. He grabbed a random book off the shelf, a well-worn copy of *Pride and Prejudice*.

He flung open the book with more force than necessary, letting it land open on a random page. His eyes narrowed as he scanned the lines of text.

Something fell out. A note, folded in half. The words on the page blurred. He felt a throbbing pulse in his temples. He read the note. *Impossible.* He slammed the book shut, the sound echoing through the room.
