He kicked the couch, wincing as his toe made contact. The house felt like a prison. He needed to be anywhere but here. He grabbed a book – a collection of poetry – off the shelf, intending to hurl it across the room.

He’d found the book at a church sale. A true bargain.

As he opened it, a folded paper fell out. He felt a sudden, sharp intake of breath. He unfolded it. His hands trembled. He read the words. It all came back to him. The anger, the frustration, the stinging shame. He felt like his head would explode. He crumpled the paper and threw it into the fireplace.
