Sarah could feel the heat prickling at the back of her neck. The sheer audacity! "Equal parts," the solicitor had chirped, as if dividing a cake. Her sister, Emily, who'd visited Grandma twice in the last decade, would get half? She ground her teeth, a sharp, unpleasant sensation.

She paced the dusty living room, her hands clenching and unclenching. The air felt thick, stale, heavy with the scent of mothballs and forgotten things. She wanted to smash something, anything, to release the pressure building inside her.
