The tremor in Amelia’s hands was nearly imperceptible, but she felt it. She bit the inside of her cheek, tasting blood. Sharing? Sharing with Daniel? The arrogant, insensitive… She couldn't even finish the thought. It was all a complete insult.

She ran her fingers over the smooth surface of the mahogany table, the polished wood reflecting her own distorted image. The house, her grandmother's haven, was now a battleground. She wanted to scream, to shatter the silence that pressed down on her like a physical weight.

She forced herself to breathe, slow, measured breaths. But the tightness in her chest remained. She abruptly rose and began to pace the room. She would not let him have this.
