Gemotions

Sarah crumpled the paper in her hands, the flimsy material offering no resistance to her rage. Her chest felt constricted, a vise slowly tightening around her lungs. She could barely breathe. The genealogy report, a glossy brochure promising family history, now felt like a hateful betrayal.

“Mom!” she yelled, her voice raw. She was in the kitchen, surrounded by the comforting smells of Sunday dinner, now utterly tainted. The familiar floral wallpaper seemed to mock her. The plates, the silverware, the very air in the room felt alien.

Her mother appeared, her face etched with a confusion that only fueled Sarah’s ire. “What is it, dear?” Her voice, usually a balm, now grated on Sarah's ears.

“Who am I?” she spat, the question a bitter accusation. Her hands were shaking so violently, she had to grip the counter to keep from falling.
