The phone call had come as she was settling in for the evening. Her husband’s voice, usually a source of comfort, sounded remote and strained. “They’ve finalized the plans,” he’d said. “It's happening.” Her breath caught in her throat.

Now she was in the car, speeding back to the city. She drove with a reckless urgency, the speedometer needle climbing. The familiar streets had transformed into a blur of motion. Her vision felt tunnelled, fixated on the destination ahead.

She gripped the steering wheel, knuckles white. She was ready to explode.
