The injustice of it all, it was a searing brand on her soul. She read the email a third time, the words blurring, the letters twisting into mocking shapes. The scholarship, her lifeline, ripped away. Her hands trembled. She wanted to shatter something, hurt something.

She looked at her reflection, saw the crimson flush on her cheeks, the wild glint in her eyes. She wanted to yell at the person in the mirror. She turned away.

She grabbed her backpack, almost yanking it off its hook. The school was a wasteland, a place of broken promises. The campus felt suddenly toxic. She had to leave, had to escape the suffocating weight of this feeling.
