He kicked the tires of his car. The metal connected with a satisfying thud, a release for the turmoil inside him. He'd been looking for her for years, hoping, dreaming of this reunion. Instead, he got blankness. She had no recollection of him.

He pictured their childhood: the scraped knees, the whispered secrets, the countless hours spent building fantastical worlds. All of it was gone, erased.

He stood in the middle of her driveway. The idyllic suburban street felt like a stage set. The silence was deafening. He felt a burning sensation in his throat.

He wanted to scream at the sky, he felt like he was going to explode. He slammed the car door with excessive force, the sound echoing down the street. The car roared to life. He reversed the vehicle and drove away.
