The polished mahogany of the desk gleamed under the overhead lamp, reflecting the seething emotions that churned inside Marcus. Another rejection. Another door slammed shut. He slammed his fist down, the sound echoing in the spacious, silent study. The elegant, leather-bound books on the shelves, now mocked him. He swept his arm across the desk, scattering pens and paperclips. A picture frame crashed to the floor, shattering into a thousand pieces. The sound was a release, but it did little to alleviate the deep, visceral feeling that threatened to overwhelm him.
