Rain lashed against the window of the cabin, mirroring the tempest inside Leo. He clutched the letter, the paper dampening with his nervous sweat. It was a plea, written to his childhood sweetheart, a girl who, like his own heart, was long gone. He hadn't even remembered writing it, until he found it tucked inside an old book.

He slammed his fist against the table. The letter spoke of dreams shattered, of a future stolen, of a lifetime lost. Every word was a barbed reminder of the life he never had.

He stalked to the fireplace, the flames dancing in time with his chaotic thoughts. He crumpled the paper into a ball, and he tossed it into the fire. It blazed brightly, consumed by the heat.
