He stormed into the gym, the weight of the day pressing down on him. His boss had just announced layoffs, and his name was on the list. He felt the familiar knot tighten in his stomach. He was close to breaking point.

He wanted to text his ex-wife, who would undoubtedly find the whole thing hilarious. He began to type, pouring his bitterness and resentment into the message. But a careless slip of his thumb, and it went to his mother.

He sat there, the message sent, the silence of the gym amplifying his internal turmoil. His mother, the gentle, supportive woman who always worried about him. What would she think? He wanted to disappear.
