The fluorescent lights of the apartment hallway seemed to hum, a discordant symphony accompanying the news. John crumpled the notice in his hand, the sound a small explosion of defiance.

He slammed his fist against the wall, leaving a dent in the cheap drywall. He wanted to break something, to obliterate the source of his anguish. He breathed heavily.

He kicked the door of his apartment, the metal frame rattling. He needed to get away, to escape the confines of this tiny space that had become a cage.
