The basement smelled of damp concrete and forgotten dreams. Liam held the letter, his knuckles white. His mother, the gentle, nurturing woman he’d always known, had abandoned her career? He could barely believe it. It felt like a punch in the gut, a betrayal.

His gaze swept over the cluttered space, the cobwebs clinging to unused tools, the boxes overflowing with things his mother had given away. He imagined her, alone in this house. He read the words again, searching for something, anything, that would make sense of it all. The unfairness of the situation, the lack of appreciation, the constant pressure.

He wanted to scream. He wanted to break something. He wanted to wake up from this nightmare. He threw the letter down, then turned and stomped up the stairs. The world felt too heavy to carry.
