She'd thought she knew him. She'd thought their bond was unbreakable. Now, it felt like a fragile thing, shattered with the announcement of his departure. The words, "New York," and "new life" echoed in her ears, each syllable a jab. Amelia felt a surge of heat rush up her neck.

She picked up a nearby pen and started scribbling furiously on a pad of paper, the tip scratching against the surface. She scribbled and scribbled, filling the page with meaningless lines and angry loops. She could feel a tremor in her hands, her fingers aching.

She crumpled the paper in her fist, squeezing until the paper tore. Then she threw it across the room. She was burning inside.
