The realtor’s saccharine description, the promises of “charming character” and “endless possibilities,” grated on his nerves. He felt a throbbing ache behind his eyes, a dull, relentless pressure. He read the words again, and again, each repetition fueling the slow burn in his gut.

He slammed his fist on the desk, scattering papers everywhere. His breath came in short, ragged gasps. He imagined tearing down the listing, ripping it to shreds, obliterating the very existence of the offer. He stood up abruptly and started pacing. The room seemed smaller, the walls closing in.
