The silence of the house was now unbearable. He'd never noticed it before. Now, it echoed with an unsettling weight. The realtor had been so pleased with her sale, so thrilled with the price. She neglected to mention the fact that the previous owners hadn't moved out on their own accord.

He stared at the fireplace, now cold and still. The thought of a fire, of warmth, felt obscene. He grabbed his coat, pulling it on with jerky movements. He needed to get away, to walk, to do anything to escape the feeling that was clawing at his insides.

He slammed the front door, the sound sharp and defiant. The street was no better, the cheerful chatter of neighbors felt like a taunt. He started to walk, head down, each step fueled by a simmering resentment.
