The phone rang again. It had been ringing all morning. Each ring a fresh stab of aggravation. Clara stared at the device, a knot twisting in her stomach. She knew who it was. The woman. The one who had birthed her father’s other child. The one who had decided to reveal this secret, this insult. Clara yanked the phone off the hook, the action abrupt and violent. She felt a flush rising on her neck, spreading through her chest. She needed to do something, something to release the tension. She slammed her fist down on the table, sending her teacup spinning to the floor in pieces.
