The silence of the house was oppressive, broken only by the rhythmic thumping of the washing machine. Mark glared at the letter in his hand. A notification from the family lawyer. A half-brother. His father, now deceased, had kept this secret his entire life. Mark felt a surge of rage. He kicked the wastebasket across the kitchen floor, sending discarded paper flying. He needed to leave, to get away from these walls that suddenly felt so constricting. He needed to breathe. He threw on his jacket and stormed out the door, the letter still clutched in his hand.
