The old house felt hollow, the sunlight failing to warm it. Clara ran her fingers over the list, the paper thin and worn. "Learn to play the piano." Her mother had never even learned to drive. The unfairness of it all clenched at her gut.

She paced the living room, the floorboards groaning under her weight. She stopped in front of the piano, the keys gleaming. It had been her mother's. Now, it was just another reminder.

She lifted the lid and slammed it back down, the sudden loud sound echoing in the room. She turned and swept everything off the top of a side table. The items clattered as they hit the floor. She did not bother to pick anything up.
