Her hands trembled as she reread the email. "Significant improvements" they called it. "Investment opportunity." The audacity. Her stomach clenched, a knot of pure, simmering heat. She’d spent the last of her savings on a new mattress, and now this.

She ripped the email in half, then again, and again, until the pieces were tiny confetti. She almost threw them out the window but instead, crumpled them into a ball and threw it with all her might into the trash. The plastic bin, usually sturdy, nearly tipped over.

She needed air. Grabbing her coat, she stormed out of the apartment, the metal door slamming behind her with a resounding crash. She was going to complain to the property manager, though she knew it wouldn't change anything. Still, she had to try.
