The elevator ride down felt interminable. He jabbed the down button repeatedly, as if that would speed things up. He could barely contain himself. The conversion. The nerve of them!

The doors finally opened onto the lobby, and he nearly collided with Mrs. Rodriguez. "Good afternoon," she chirped. He mumbled something unintelligible, unable to meet her gaze. He hurried past, unable to fake a smile.

He pushed through the revolving doors and out onto the street. The sun was shining, the birds were singing, and everything felt wrong. He walked faster, each stride an effort to outpace the mounting feeling of being trapped.
